day 1 (day after surgery)

Day after surgery

So after Day 0 (day of surgery) I went home, and 90% of time had foot up on pillows (higher then heart) and rested. I pretty much did the same for today, the day after surgery.

I used no crutches or canes to move, which going upstairs on the day of surgery was slow, and not bad as still had good drugs running through me.

But today, the only thing using is the weak hydrocodone (nothing compared to Oxycontin, which they provide rarely, thanks to the opioid overdose epidemic).

So at rest, the pain level was around 1 or 2, but getting up to walk, you could feel the blood rush to the foot and was around 4 or 5 when walking (aka hobble) on the heel.

But overall, was off the feet most of the day. Kept up with 3-hour rotation between hydrocodone and ibuprofen seems to keep the pain at bay. At night, slept with a pillow underfoot to keep it elevated, helped pretty good. I woke up around 3 AM , to take hydrocodone as the pain was started to elevate and it was past due of pain medicine. All good shortly after.

  1. Interestingly, I had cheilectomy #2 yesterday on the right foot, and it feels substantially better than the first one did the next day. In fact, so much better I removed all the bandages to see if it the incision and stitches looked different. Nope, looks exactly the same.

I do know that the other foot was originally in worse shape and that’s why I wanted it handled first. But I expected the outcome to be similar. This foot feels much further along on the next day. So for those going into this, at least in my case I’m walking around in my stuff shoe without any problem. I never took any of the heavy duty pain killers. I followed the podiatrist advice by taking 2 naproxen twice per day (at breakfast and dinner). I was able to reduce that after about day 3 or 4 the first time around.

I’m also making sure to keep it iced and elevated. I’m shocked at how much easier this is than the first one.

  2. Hi,
I’m on Day 1. The nerve block they used (multiple injections around ankle) didn’t even start wearing off until midnight last night. I’ve been rotating between 800mg ibuprofen for 8 hours, then 400mg Tylenol for 6 hours.
If I’m sitting with “toes above the nose,” it’s not bad and I don’t notice discomfort if I’m distracted.
But even a quick trip to the bathroom hurts and feels tight. I guess that’s the swelling.
I find it very hard to sleep with the foot elevated, so haven’t had much rest yet. Maybe 5 hours total since surgery 24 hours ago.

  3. Yea, I was prescribed Percocet – which is an opioid. The insurance company didn’t approve it, so I paid for it myself – $15. I think I used 3 tabs total over the first two days. Not because it hurt, just following instructions to not let any pain get ahead of you.
