week 5 (some throbbing yet)

Increasing Physical Therapy

Now that we past the 1 month milestone from last week, on to month two. Week 5 is a pretty good improvement over week 4. But will be honest, doesn’t seem like its healing as fast as I would have hoped.

Recover Expectation

But I guess what do we expect when your skin and bones are cut up. Takes some time to heal. My battle scar (as seen in picture below) is showing up nicely (can you tell I’m a guy) , which is way better then the alternative of it getting infected and having to work through that issue.

So I touched on this a bit last week, the recovery still feels slow and only seen some slight progress regarding flexibility, but the pain felt when flexing it or putting weight on while flexing it has been improved by at least another 5% when walking on it.

Although it still requires me to not put full weight on it during walk, as the pain in the joint/wound is still healing as expected and not getting worst, which is the alternative right?

Physical Therapy Continues….

I continue to do work on the flexibility on the toe. Since I sit at a computer for my job, I take breaks and push on my toe, picking up my heel as far as feasible, right where I feel stretch and slight pain and hold it there for 30 seconds. Then repeat that several times. Try to get this in at least 3-5 times a day.

I am not able to walk 100% normal yet, still throb a bit when toe flexes during normal walk. I believe this is getting slightly better, time will tell. Flat foot you can definitely feel the surgery area (mainly bottom of joint) is still healing, as it feels like dull knife if you try to walk normally bare feet (where major flex of toe is required).

When wearing shoes, its way better, as the shoe typically helps reduce the flex needed when walking.

Did you complete the procedure? If so did your surgery/healing thus far match mine or differ in someway? Lets hear it in the comments below.

  1. I am so glad I found your blog. I am in week 5 post-surgery and was getting concerned that my foot is not progressing fast enough (although in reality it’s only been 5 weeks since my foot was sliced and diced!). However, my results thus far match your week 5 and that gives me some relief.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I will be comparing each week with yours moving forward :-).

    1. Hi Lynn & blogger!
So pleased to have found this. I am 5 and half weeks post op, and my symptoms are very similar to what I have read. I had surgery on both my feet at the same time, and have been quite down at times that the recovering isn’t moving as fast I had hoped. But then I think I am putting too much pressure on myself. They said I could drive at 6 weeks, but I am not feeling confident enough to get behind the wheel just yet!
I will continue to compare each week too!
      Thanks

  2. My podiatrist/surgeon (Dr. Carla Docharty) told me I’d be healed and running again in 4-6 weeks. It’s 6 months later now and my swelling and pain is 10 times worse than before the surgery and I have extreme numbness and shooting nerve pain I didn’t have before. Can’t walk, let alone run. She gave me pills that did nothing, except stress my kidneys.

    1. Wow, that’s not good and sorry to hear that experience. But even the not so good experiences should be shared along with the positive. As when ever humans have “modifications” done to one’s body the outcome can be vastly different. But this experience really is an anomaly from what should have been a good outcome based on just the othe comments and feedback on this blog alone. If you have any more details to share on this that would be great, was it a standard big toe surgery, anything noted post surgery or was it stated surgery went as planned etc…? I would agree with the doctor, you should be running by now, so something went amiss and would be interested in hearing how this plays out.

  3. I’m on day 28. 4 weeks since Cartiva implant put in and the cheilectomy done on a very stiff right big toe. Most of my pain when flexing or trying to bear weight is underneath my toe, and the ballpad- flexibility is not great. I’m still chasing to walk on side of my foot which is giving me issues through my body! I’m not returning this week to my physically active job. I just so want this to get better. How were you at week 6? Still a bit better? 3 months?

  4. Hello there , were the pictures of the flex toe taken while you were sitting down or standing up? I’m in week 4 of my surgery and would love to compare progress ! Thanks !

    1. Hello, thanks for checking out my experience. All my pictures were taken standing up. Does the flex compare with yours?
