day 6 (some flexibility)

Starting some soft stretches, bends in toe

They say, or at least my doctor, states as soon as able to to start some light movement, and some activity without causing more pain, issues.

Of course this is going to vary for each, so I started doing a little today, but noticed I was getting some bleeding out of the wound yet and it kinda looked like it needed to lay low a bit, so I stopped stretching for the day.

As you can see from the picture below (warning slightly graphic), the stitches are fully intact, but some seepage was occurring.

So word of advice, even though you may feel up to trying some physical therapy (PT) to get a jump start, keep an eye on your pain level and your sutures/wound area to see if you good to proceed.

Did you complete the procedure? If so did your surgery/healing thus far match mine or differ in someway? Lets here it.

  1. I’m day six post op. Today I stopped in work for an hour (keeping my foot up on a footstool) and stood (about 20 minutes) in my boot to schedule PT that starts in 13 days. My foot is quite angry. As of this morning, the swelling was down, color was good. Tonight, however, it is very swollen and my foot is purple. Not the bruising purple such as on my toes, but blood under the skin purple. I’m quite nervous. Just got done icing (again) ibuprofen and Oxycodone/ acetametaphin and elevated on four pillows. I’m also having a burning/searing pain that is new, versus the throbbing pain. I’ll call the doc when they open in seven hours.

  2. I’m on day six. I have done a minimal invasive operation. As I am a bit swollen I wanted to check how it looked today so I changed my bandage When I had my scar exposed I gently put some mild pressure on the operated area, and a lot of a rather thick yellow liquid that was mixed with blood came out.
My surgeon had prepared me for the liquid coming out, but I did not excpect it to be so creamy and yellow.
Will call him tomorrow to check. Have anyone had similar excperiences?

  3. I’m on day 6 myself. Glad I found this site to see what to expect. My doctor wanted me to start toe exercises and I can say it’s a bit painful. I can walk in the shoe that was provided. My mistake was walking on my heel it was causing extreme pain at my post op yesterday I was told I was supposed to be applying pressure evenly on the whole foot. Wow did that make a huge difference. Wish I would have known that upfront! I’ve been instructed to keep my foot elevated for 22 hrs a day for the next week and to do toe exercises 3 times a day for 5 minutes upwards and 5 minutes downwards…

    1. Good to hear its going well. And like most surgeries, there’s a balance of getting movement back in the surgery area as soon as possible while not disturbing the actual healing progress to much.

  4. I’m also at Day 6, having done the exact same surgery on my other foot 4 years ago. Nice having an idea of what to expect second time around. My doctor wants me to leave the bandage on until my 2 week post op visit. Similar to what CA said, I think it this is just to prevent infection. As with the last surgery, my bandage will most likely slide off before then, though! I have a litte range of motion, and have been going for daily walks in my surgery boot, and do some core and upper body every other day. When I get back from my walks, I do prop up my foot and ice it for 20 mins just in case I’ve caused any swelling. Hard to tell with the bandage, but I don’t have pain.

    1. Hi, I realize you had surgery over 2 years ago, however; I’m hoping you’ll answer some questions. I have surgery scheduled next month on my left foot. When you say you did daily walks, was this walking around the house or going on short walks outside? I’m a very active, fit person and hopefully will recover quickly, however; don’t know what to expect but I’m hoping I can move around without too much pain a week or so after. Whatever info you can provide would be great. Thanks

  5. I’m at Day 6. Although I change the bandage daily, there is still a SteriStrip attached to the wound that should be left on until it falls off on its own. So my incision so far is blocked from detailed inspection.

As for range of motion, I can curl the big toe downwards, and upwards slightly. I have not been advised yet about any PT. They seem more concerned about infection control / not breaking and skin healing.
